Hadrian’s Wall is a remarkable historical structure built between AD 122 and 128. Stretching 117 kilometers across Northern England, it runs from the River Tyne to the Solway Firth. At every “Roman mile” (approximately 1.5 kilometers) along the wall, a milecastle was constructed. These milecastles served as small forts, accommodating up to 50 soldiers.

Milecastle 39 boasts a broad gauge wall, measuring an impressive 9.5 feet thick. The masonry used is substantial, and the milecastle itself spans 80 feet by 70 feet. Adjacent to it, the Hadrian’s Wall segment is under 8 feet thick. Inside the milecastle, there were likely two large stone buildings, possibly serving as barracks for Roman soldiers.
