About This Artwork
“Ripples in the Tyne” is a breathtaking transformation of architectural form into fluid abstraction. The composition is a swirling, galaxy-like vortex, with brilliant white and neon blue ribbons looping and intertwining over a deep, cosmic black background. If you look closely, you can see the ghostly echoes of the bridge’s structure hidden within the light. It perfectly bridges the gap between the industrial heritage of the North East and futuristic, digital artistry.
The Artisan Process: From Bridge to Abstract
These are not AI-generated images. This piece began as an original photograph of the Tyne Bridge in Newcastle, captured by Michael Paul Bennett.
Using Adobe Photoshop, he converted the image into a Smart Object and began a meticulous layering process. He applied the Mezzotint filter—which includes long strokes—alongside distortion techniques like Twirl and Ripple to break the bridge apart and create these fluid shapes. Finally, he adjusted the colour balance of the layers and used Adobe Lightroom to deep-dive into the shadows, achieving that signature deep black background and vibrant colour pop.
