Behind the Light: An Interview with Digital Artist Michael Paul Bennett

At Download Artwork, we believe that knowing the story behind a piece of art makes it even more powerful.

Michael Paul Bennett is the brilliant mind behind the Luminous Art Collection—a series of explosive, glowing abstract prints that have captivated our customers. But these aren’t AI-generated images. They are the result of years of photographic experience and meticulous digital craftsmanship.

We sat down with Michael to discuss his creative process, his favourite tools, and what goes through his mind when he’s building a piece from scratch.

Q: Michael, your Luminous Art pieces look incredibly complex. Where does the process begin?

Michael: It always begins with one of my own original photographs. I never start from a blank canvas. I take a photo I’ve captured, load it into Adobe Photoshop, and immediately convert it to a Smart Object. This allows me to manipulate the image non-destructively, which is crucial because I’m about to push it through a lot of layers.

Q: What happens next? The textures in your work look almost three-dimensional.

Michael: I start applying filters. I use the Mezzotint filter—which includes long strokes—to build texture. Then, I layer on various distortion techniques, like the Twirl filter, to break the image apart and create those fluid, dynamic shapes. I do this across multiple layers to build depth.

Q: Is that where the glowing colours come from?

Michael: Not yet. Once the distortion layers are built, I go into the colour balance of each individual layer and start changing the blending types. This is where the magic happens. Because the layers interact with each other, you get these explosive, luminous colours that feel like they are glowing from the inside out.

Q: And the deep black backgrounds?

Michael: That’s the final step. I take the completed artwork into Adobe Lightroom. I spend time deep-diving into the shadows and the blacks. I want the background to fall away completely so the colours really pop. That contrast is what gives the Luminous Art its signature look.

Q: It sounds like a very manual, time-consuming process. Why not just use AI?

Michael: Because AI doesn’t have a photographer’s eye. AI can generate a pretty picture, but it doesn’t understand the original light, the composition, or the emotion of the photograph I started with. By using my own photography as the base, the final piece retains a connection to the real world. It’s a true fusion of photography and digital art.

Q: Finally, who do you think this art is for?

Michael: I think it resonates with people who want energy in their space. If you have a home office, a creative studio, or a modern living room, these pieces bring a massive surge of colour and movement. They are for the Idea-Engine—the person who wants their walls to inspire them to think differently.
